How Long Can You Drive on a Spare Tire?

Kia Sportage Spare Tire

Spare tires can be a lifesaver when your car gets a flat on the road in Kansas City, but you can’t drive on a spare forever—and it’s best to replace your spare tire as soon as possible. How long your spare tire lasts will vary depending on the type of tire.  Here at Hendrick Chevrolet Shawnee Mission, we have a dedicated tire center that provides excellent service. To learn more about spare tires, read below with Hendrick Chevrolet Shawnee Mission!

Space-Saver Spare Tires

So, exactly how long can you drive on a spare tire? It depends on whether you have a space-saver spare or a full-size spare. Because of their smaller size, space-saver spares tend to be included on newer vehicles, but they also have limitations. Keep these points in mind if you have a space-saver spare:

  • Don’t drive over 50 miles per hour
  • Don’t drive for more than 70 miles
  • You will have less traction than you would with a full-size spare

You can check your owner’s manual if you’d like more specific details about your particular space-saver or fulls-size spare tire. If you do get a flat and need to install the spare, make sure to get a regular tire on your vehicle with the help of our service center as soon as possible.

Full-Size Spare Tires

Full-size spare tires are not as common, but they are typically included with newer trucks and SUVs. Although a full-size spare will last a bit longer than a space-saver spare, you’ll still want to get it replaced as soon as possible.

Because the spare is generally a different brand from the rest of the original tires on the car, you may experience problems like uneven tread wear, traction issues, and compromised handling. The level of wear-and-tear also differs from regular tires, which may cause an imbalance while you drive on Overland Park roads. Get a viable replacement as soon as you can to avoid these issues.

What is a Run-Flat Tire?

A run-flat tire can maintain pressure even after a puncture from a nail or sharp object on the road. They remain inflated for about 50 miles post-puncture, but are usually more expensive than a regular tire. Make sure to check your tires every so often to make sure you don’t have any punctures. Newer cars will have a tire pressure monitor and will alert you when you have a tire that’s running low on air. If you find a puncture, schedule an appointment with us so our professional technicians can fix the issue and get you back on the road.
